A lot of dry shampoos come in aerosol cans or plastic containers, which aren’t super ideal when you’re trying to cut down on your waste.
And, let’s be honest… the ingredients in drugstore dry shampoo can be questionable. Here are the ingredients from Dove’s dry shampoo:
“Isobutane, Propane, Sd Alcohol 40-B (Alcohol Denat.), Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Butane, Fragrance (Parfum), Isopropyl Myristate, Silica, Cyclopentasiloxane “
I’m assuming alcohol is high on the list because it’s drying and will help absorb grease, but alcohol really dries out your hair and can cause damage to it over an extended period of time.
The other ingredient that always makes me wary is Fragrance. Fragrance is considered a trade secret… so you’re allowed to put anything in it, and you’re not legally required to disclose what’s inside. Pretty crazy, right?
Here’s more info from EWG Skin Deep on the product, if you’re curious.
All of this to say, a lot of dry shampoos aren’t super great from a personal health standpoint or an environmental standpoint. And, to be honest, they’re not super good from the $$$ standpoint either.
If you’re using dry shampoo (like I am), it can really add up!

This dry shampoo recipe is easy, super inexpensive, and A-OK for your health — and the health of the planet! After all, that’s what this blog is all about.
I like to store my homemade dry shampoo in a salt and pepper shaker for easy application. I just sprinkle the mixture straight onto my hair. If you’re looking for a little more control, you can always use a makeup brush!

People expect a learning curve when learning how to make dry shampoo. Sometimes, when you use dry shampoo, the powder can turn your hair slightly ashy.
I don’t experience this problem, but if you know it’s a problem for you, I recommend sprinkling the mixture on your hair an inch or two away from your natural part. Adding the cocoa powder to create a hue that’s closer to the color of your natural hair helps too.

light hair dry shampoo:
- 1 Tablespoon Bentonite Clay
- 1 Tablespoon Arrowroot Powder
dark hair dry shampoo:
- 1 Tablespoon Bentonite Clay
- 1 Tablespoon Arrowroot Powder
- 1 Tablespoon of Cocoa Powder
Bentonite Clay might seem like an odd ingredient, but it’s highly absorbent and helps to draw oils away from the skin! Plus, it won’t over-dry the scalp like alcohol will. So, don’t skip it.
Use cocoa powder when making a dry shampoo recipe for dark hair — it will turn the mixture brown so that you don’t see that chalky residue in your hair from the lighter mixtures.
how to make dry shampoo
Simply combine the ingredients for your homemade dry shampoo in your container of choice. Stir or shake to combine the ingredients well.
I use an old salt shaker for my DIY dry shampoo so I can just shake it into my hair. I’ve also stored it in a shallow mason jar and applied it with a makeup brush.
This mixture contains bentonite clay, so it’s important to remember to use a wooden spoon to scoop and mix — metal will cause the clay to deactivate!
faqs about diy dry shampoo
when will i ever use bentonite clay again?
I hate when recipes call for random ingredients that you’re only going to use one time… but I promise you will find yourself reaching for bentonite clay again and again and again!
You can use it in a DIY healing face mask, remineralizing toothpowder, and even a finishing powder!
For a recipe with a little more healing power to it, check out this one from my friend Alison at Wu Haus.
making dry shampoo at home isn’t for me. where can i buy a sustainable dry shampoo?
A DIY dry shampoo is not the best option for everyone.
If DIY is not you’re thing, here are two dry shampoos with clean ingredients that come in recyclable and/or reusable packaging: La Tierra Sagrada and Captain Blankenship.
what is the purpose of arrowroot powder in dry shampoo?
Arrowroot powder dry shampoo is great because arrowroot is suitable for a sensitive scalp. I’ve also seen diy dry shampoo recipes that use corn starch and baking soda, but I’ve personally never loved the texture of either of those. To me, they feel grainy and don’t disappear into my hair as well.
I much prefer the silky texture of bentonite and arrowroot powder dry shampoo. You’ll have to let me know if you disagree!
what are good essential oils to add to homemade dry shampoo?
Essential oils can add a yummy scent to your DIY dry shampoo. Adding just a couple of drops can make your hair smell and look fresh. And thoughtful additions of essential oils can also provide a lot of benefits to your hair!
For instance, rosemary is said to promote hair growth and thickness as well as treat dry scalp and dandruff issues.
Peppermint helps with blood flow and hair growth and might help with itching or dryness.
Lavender is said to thicken and strengthen hair, plus the scent is known for stress relieving properties. I love the scent of lavender, so I might add some to my next batch!

What about redheads?
If you’re a light redhead I’d go without cocoa, and if you’re a dark red head I’d add a little bit of cocoa. In the video you can see even with adding the cocoa, it’s not super dark. It’s just really best to make sure that it’s blended in!
Cinnamon? My friend actually changes her hair color to red somehow with cinnamon. It’s so amazing.
I’ve been using a shampoo soap bar for my hair. I’ve never really read about or heard about dry shampoo – will definitely have a look into it though! Thanks for sharing.
Dry shampoo isn’t a permanent solution, it just helps to absorb/disguise oily roots and give you an extra day if you can’t be bothered to wash.
I hope you love it!!
I used the clay to make a tooth powder and I actually found it started to irritate my teeth. I was wondering if it’s because I have metal fillings. Isn’t the clay supposed to draw out metal? So did I deactivate the clay by having metal fillings or was it trying to pull the metal from the fillings? I know it sounds odd but I couldn’t figure out why it was irritating my teeth
I don’t think that’s enough clay to affect your fillings. Sometimes, you just have sensitivities to things! Just like one brand of natural deodorant might work great for you and not for me. Good news is there’s tons of different uses for the bentonite clay you have leftover.
I’m a blonde, and I use one ingredient in my dry shampoo: cornstarch. I just dip my fingers into the container and then massage it into my roots. Super cheap, super easy, and absolutely no ashiness. I brush it all through in the end. Buy cornstarch in bulk for zero waste. I expect arrowroot would also work well.
I’ve used cornstarch in the past but have found that arrowroot works much better! If you have arrowroot in bulk, it might be worth giving it a go. 🙂
Will using a metal measuring spoon deactivate the clay?
