Pantry Party

April 16, 2015 Kathryn Kellogg
Finishing up the pantry, and there are finally enough jars to keep all the staples.

Finishing up the pantry, and there are finally enough jars to keep all the staples.

Budgeting, although not a sexy topic, entirely necessary. If you're thinking about starting something new, it's always nice to know what it costs. I'm almost always tempted to bust the budget grocery shopping. I love food! It is the ultimate sharing experience, it nourishes you, it brings joy, and it’s fun to make new things. My goal is to get all of this real food on a budget of $50 a week.

While I have always enjoyed grocery shopping, I find visiting the bulk section to be an even more pleasant experience. It’s so satisfying to rip open bins, carefully scoop delicious ingredients, and watch my jars fill to the brim. I also love how simple it’s become to put the groceries away. Everything is already in its container, and I can put it right back where it belongs.

Labeled Pantry

I also want to break a misconception that cooking from scratch is time consuming. It can be a laborious process, but it can also be quick, easy and fun. Throughout this blogging experience, I want to share recipes with you that use bulk ingredients and can be done quickly.

This week I took a trip to Berkeley Bowl. They have rows and rows of organic goodies in bulk! I filled up on 2 cups of cocoa powder, 5 cups of brown sugar, 2 cups of millet, 2 cups of pasta, 8 cups of soy beans, 3 cups of peanut butter filled pretzels, 3 large heirloom tomatoes, and 2 avocados for $24.00. I’m looking forward to making brownies, chocolate chip cookies, vegan cheese, macaroni & cheese, avocado toast, and marinara with my haul. Farmers market veggies and bread from the bakery totaled in at $12.00. I had enough meat left over from last week to avoid going to the butcher. We’ve significantly cut back on meat consumption because of the drought, sustainability, and to eat more veggies!

That's the last plastic you'll see in this kitchen. I'm finishing off the stock pile, and loading the jars with chocolate chips, granola, crackers, and some pasta.

For groceries this week I’ve spent $36.00. I know it will start to go up, as we finish what’s in the stock pile. Cleaning out the stock pile is very liberating. I’ve poured most of what we have left into jars, and finished up the pantry this week. I’ve labeled stable items such as corn starch, baking soda, flour, sugar… they all kinda look the same. In fact I actually mislabeled the soy beans and garbanzo beans. I don’t think soy bean hummus would be very tasty, but I could be wrong.

I can’t wait to start cooking! What are you making for dinner tonight?

When picking up litter there are two reactions. Kathryn - "Yay! We saved the litter and prevented it from being washed out to sea!" Tristyn - "Why the hell was the litter there in the first place!?" Are you more of a Kathryn or a Tristyn?
When I was in LA, I got to grab breakfast with Tristyn @trissykay on the way back home to the bay! I wish we lived closer, we had such a good time talking all about sustainablilty and picking up litter - like you do. Normal things girls do in their 20s. 😉 #goingzerowaste
Plus, we both have all white Huskies. 🐕🐾 .

Do you remember the first time you really connected to nature? It was one of the first times I climbed Pinnacle Mountain in Arkansas.
I just sat at the top and looked at all of the trees and the Arkansas river. Something inside just clicked. I started going on local hikes, stargazing, went to 14 National parks and made plans to do the Appalachian Trail. (I never hiked the AT, but never say never.) There's something about spending time outside and really connecting with the Earth. We need her to live. She provides food, water, air. If we put pollution in, we're going to get pollution back.
Earth Day is a great holiday to peek others interests in sustainablilty, then we just have to keep it going all year long.
On the blog today I wrote about 50 ideas to keep going all year long. How do you plan to keep the Earth Day momentum going? What's one actionable thing you can do to help others and yourself? #goingzerowaste .

We got in on the Earth Day action a little early last weekend, and the cleanup at Audubon Center Debs Park was a total success! We collected 15 giant bags of trash dumped in the park, and cleaned up the entrance by pulling weeds and mulching. Plus, I got to talk about the Big Four and fighting plastic pollution. Thank you @iamwellandgood and @origins for hosting this awesome event! Every time you post a picture using the hashtag #GreenThePlanet in the month of April, @origins will plant a tree for you. Let's all plant some trees! ☺️🌲#GoingZeroWaste #iamwellandgood
This is my trash for two years. It looks the exact same as it did last year because I decided not to carry on with the experiment, and here are a few things that I've learned. (Although, I still don't have a trash can or a recycle bin in the house!) 1. I have learned to look past trash and start looking at the bigger picture. Sometimes a little bit of trash is still the more eco choice depending on the circumstances.
2. I feel free to finally, maybe, try some vegan ice-cream in a package. 😁 Something I haven't been able to do. The biggest curse of being allergic to dairy most of my life was going zero waste right as dairy free stuff became popular.
3. Not related to the trash jar, but I feel that my focus has shifted. We all grow. We all change. We all evolve, and for me personally I have transitioned from a very narrow view point on trash alone to a much broader view point focused on mass change at a large scale... Which is done with a lot of hands in their local community, and a lot more talking to companies, businesses, and mass media. A lot of which is behind the scenes work.
I'm so proud to work in my community and I can't wait to share more ways you can be active in yours.
4. Always be positive! I'm not always positive even though I try to be. I've said it a million times - any step in the right direction is still a step in the right direction.
It's not about perfection; it's about making better choices.
I'm not trying to win zero waste. The jar is not a competition. It's an awareness tool and it had done it's job. It will always be with me marking my first two years of trash. I can always pick up again if I want to, but for now... I don't.
Wishing you all a happy Earth Day weekend.
Let's spend some time with our Mother, appreciating her and everything she provides. After all, good planets are hard to find. ❤️🌼🌍 #GoingZeroWaste .

Another peek of the shoot I did with @Refinery29 and @HM! I honestly had the most amazing time. My reusable water bottle was my best friend while on set. I looked high and low for a cooler, but decided if push came to shove, I'd just fill my bottle up from the sink in the bathroom. But, there was a water cooler hidden in a distant corner. I'd like to say I found it, but of course my mom did. Mom's are the greatest. Tip 1) Don't be afraid to speak up and ask if there's a water cooler around Tip 2) Don't be afraid to be a little different - being different is awesome! Refinery29 certainly pampered me with delicious veggie food, hair, makeup, a manicure, and getting wear these gorgeous pieces from @HM's #ConsciousExclusive Collection. Two gals from H&M came on set, and I got to chat with them about their sustainable textiles. I'm really impressed with the initiatives H&M is making. They're trying to become climate positive by 2040 and close the loop on their textiles. Their new sustainable collection includes tenecel which is closed loop and Econyl which is made from old fishing nets. Their beading is from recycled glass and the shimmering threads one some of the clothing in the line is made from old candlesticks! If you want to get a closer look at the fabrics, the collection is available today! You can grab a closer look in my stories, and don't forget to check out the article! I had the best time in NYC, thank you Refinery29 and H&M for having me. :) #ad #GoingZeroWaste
What are the zero waste bathroom products you just love?? Here are a couple of mine that I use every day! I couldn't lug my bidet out of the toilet, but we use a combo of TP and the bidet attachment! I have a whole post up today about our TP brand of choice @whogivesacraptp!
The other things I can't live without are @plaineproducts makes my hair so happy, my wooden brush to help move oil from root to tip! Thinking about doing a post on keeping your brush clean and maintained. Let me know if that interests you.
My @brushwithbamboo toothbrush - always! My spray on deodorant, recipe on the blog. I've started running the salt through a blender so it's super fine and no clogged spray bottle.
A perfume from @mcmcfragrances and my tinted suncreen from @marieveronique_!
Bout to put on my tinted suncreen and go for a walk with the pupper that made this shot possible. If you don't know what I'm talking about... Go see my stories. 😂
