Lip to Cheek: DIY Beauty

Beauty

Last Updated on January 23, 2024

I have had a lot of beauty experiments. Not all of them go according to plan. In fact most fall pretty flat. But, I have to say I’m pretty stoked about this lip to cheek. There are two different versions.

First you need to get a beet. Peel it and grate it. Add the beet shreds into a sieve. Place the sieve over a bowl and press the juice out.

OPTION 1: Make my chapstick recipe and add 2 Tablespoons of beet juice. You’ll need to constantly stir it as it cools to properly combine all of the ingredients. Apply it by dabbing onto cheeks and blending. You can use a lip brush or your finger for lips.

OPTION 2: Pour the beet juice into a container with a roller and add 1/8 of teaspoon of clear alcohol. Give a good shake, and roll onto your cheeks and blend. Roll onto lips and apply non-tinted chapstick on top.

The vitamin E in the chapstick and the alcohol in the roller both work as preservatives. I found that the chapstick recipe broke down quicker even when stored in the fridge. It tends to oxidize and turn a little darker in color.  That could also be that it’s stored in a metal tin?

Overall I like the roller better and applying non-tinted chapstick on my lips afterwords. I think it lasts longer and applies easier. It’s also easier to make! A total win all the way around. When’s the last time you bought organic makeup for .80 cents?

Do you think you’ll try it? Have you made any DIY make up? What were your successes and failures?

  1. Kathryn! These are gorgeous. Will be trying this when my current one runs out. You are so rad for cooking this up!

  2. I’ve never tried making my own cosmetics but it is interesting! I’m going to share with my teen daughter, I bet she and her friends would love it!

  3. I have never tried making my own makeup but I would love making my own lipsticks and eyeshadows. Your lip to cheek diy looks great

  4. I definitely want to try adding this to my chapstick! Have you ever tried using hibiscus powder? I think that is going to be my next kitchen adventure that will take 3 days to clean up.

    1. I’ve heard really good things about it! Please let me know when you make it! I would love to read about it. I tried to make beetroot powder, but makeup wise – it was a complete failure. lol.

  5. I love this! Actually, I love beets in general, but they are perfect for dying just about anything. I love DIY beauty products. We love lotion bars as well 🙂

  6. I have never made makeup before. My sister knows how to make chapstick or lipgloss. They’re really nice actually. So cool you did this!

  7. Wow, that looks great on you! I’m ready to try it myself! Do you think i could use pommegranate instead of beets? (because I often find pommegranates when dumpsterdiving). Do you know of other ingredients if one wants to make lip stain in another color? My dream is making one in deep burgundy red!

  8. Dude no no no. You cannot make a batch and use it all week. It turns dark and smells. You need to add a small amount of powder to a little water every day in a clean cup apply to the cheeks with a brush. This stuff works wonderful, but honestly has to be made DAILY

  9. Hi, I tried a different way. I washed, sliced, then boiled the beets then reduced the liquid. I poured the liquid into a jar and added a splash of vodka. I loved the result but the liquid went rancid within a week! Did I do something wrong? What is the normal "shelf life"?

  10. Hi! Is the beet cooked before grating it or is it raw? Do you keep this in the fridge? How long can I expect it to keep? Thank you!
